The "Just a Game" Lie
How We Are Building a Stronghold for the Enemy
My dear friends in Christ,
We are good at recognizing the obvious dangers. As faithful Catholics, we know to stay away from Ouija boards, from tarot cards, from mediums and seances. We know that sorcery and magic are what the Bible calls an "abomination" (Deuteronomy 18). These are the direct gateways to the enemy.
But the enemy is a master strategist, and he is a liar. In an age of skepticism, he knows that fewer people will come to his hidden altar to "worship" him. So, he has changed his strategy from worship to familiarity.
His new goal is normalization.
And his new altar is in our living room. His new gateway is our computer screens, our smartphones and our televisions. I feel a burning need to warn you about the danger we are letting into our homes under the guise of "entertainment."
Gateway 1: When "Playing" Becomes "Training"
The most common lie we tell ourselves is, "It's just a game. It's not real." But what are we training our souls to desire?
Look at games like League of Legends or Mobile Legends. These are not just strategy games; they are games of identification. You are asked to become characters who are, by their own lore, demons of sin. You can play as Fiddlesticks, the "Demon of Fear," or Evelynn, the "Demon of Agony." You can play as Alice in Mobile Legends, who "sold her life to serve a demon."
When you spend hours becoming the "Demon of Agony," you are, for that time, adopting the will of the demon. You are training your mind to see the demonic as a tool, as a source of power, and as something heroic. This is a direct offense to Romans 12:2: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind."
Gateway 2: The Defilement of the Eyes
Now let us speak of another gateway, one that is not occult but is just as demonic: pornography.
This is not a "lesser" sin. It is a profound spiritual gateway. St. Paul warns us that "fornication, impurity, licentiousness... sorcery... and the like... those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:19-21). Notice how impurity and sorcery are listed side by side as "works of the flesh."
Why is pornography a gateway?
It Defiles the Temple: Our Lord is clear: "every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). And St. Paul commands us: "Flee fornication. ...Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit... So glorify God in your body" (1 Corinthians 6:18-20). When you view pornography, you are inviting filth into the very temple consecrated to God.
It Invites Spirits of Lust: Like the occult, this sin is not a private affair. It is an invitation. You are opening your mind and soul to spirits of lust, perversion, and addiction. It is a spiritual act that rewires your brain and hardens your heart, making true love and true intimacy impossible. It is the perfect tool for the "Demon of Addiction."
Both the demonic game and the pornographic image serve the same master. One glamorizes rebellion and power, the other glamorizes lust and defilement. Both are lies.
The Grave Scandal of Toying with Evil
This entire strategy becomes a spiritual catastrophe when it targets our children. Let’s truly, deeply meditate on our Lord's own terrifying words:
"...but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea." (Matthew 18:6)
When we give our children toys, cartoons, or books that present demons, ghosts, or occult practices as fun, friendly, or harmless, we are actively desensitizing them. We are spiritually confusing them. We are committing a grave scandal. We are commanded to "Abstain from every form of evil" (1 Thessalonians 5:22). We are not told to "play" with it.
From Gateway to Stronghold
How do all these things such as the "harmless" game, the "private" sin, the "fun" toy work together?
They are the enemy's building blocks. He is not just trying to make you commit one sin. He is trying to build a house. He wants to turn your very being into his property.
First, he targets your MIND. This is the Gateway. The images from pornography, the strategies from the demonic game, the "cool" occult symbols from a movie. These "unfruitful works of darkness" (Ephesians 5:11) are the seeds. He wants to colonize your imagination. St. Paul tells us our weapons are for "destroying strongholds, destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). The enemy does the exact opposite: he uses media to make your thoughts disobedient to Christ.
Second, he seizes your HEART. This is the Devil's Playground. Your heart is the seat of your desires. Once your mind is full of these images, your heart begins to change. It stops desiring the good, the true, and the beautiful. It begins to desire the forbidden power of the game. It begins to crave the impure pleasure of pornography. Your heart, meant for God, becomes a playground for demonic temptations.
Third, he defiles your BODY. This is the Tool. Your body, which is a "temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 6:19), becomes the tool for sin. Your eyes are given over to lust. Your hands are given over to playing as a demon. Your body, meant to "glorify God," is now used to service the "works of the flesh."
Fourth, he captures your SOUL. This is the Devil's Stronghold. This is the goal. Through habitual, unrepented mortal sin (whether sorcery or lust), your soul is cut off from sanctifying grace. It becomes a place of darkness, a fortress of sin. The enemy has built a stronghold inside you.
Finally, he claims your HOME. This is the Beachhead. When the people in a home are compromised, the "domestic church" is defiled. The spiritual protection of the home collapses. The very Wi-Fi router that brings in the poison, the game console, the smartphone—these become altars for the enemy. Your home, meant to be a fortress for God, becomes a beachhead for a demonic invasion. This is the terrifying reality of our Lord's parable in Luke 11:24-26: when an unclean spirit is cast out, it wanders... and if it finds the "house" (your soul, your home) "swept and put in order" but empty of God, it returns with "seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first."
A Lion, Not a Pet
We are told to "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).
A roaring lion is not a pet. It is not a character in a game. It is not a "private" pleasure. It is a real predator.
As Faithful Christians we should, "take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them" (Ephesians 5:11). Protect your home. Protect your "little ones." Repent. Go to Confession. Do not let the enemy catechize your family.
A Personal Plea
As I write this, my heart is heavy, not with judgment, but with a plea for vigilance because I have seen the fruit of this. The enemy's greatest trick is to make you comfortable with his presence. He is content to be your "plaything" for a decade if it means he can be your master for eternity. Do not underestimate the spiritual poison that is packaged as "entertainment" or "privacy." Your soul, and the souls of your children, are worth infinitely more.
